PowerHy-5 Project
5kW fuel cell (FC) generator set with a switchable hydrogen storage
The main objective is the generation of emission-free backup electrical energy.
If there is a power grid outage, the PowerHy-5 equipment would operate, consuming hydrogen to generate energy. During the power outage, the PowerHy-5 equipment would work autonomously and the moment the electricity from the grid returned, the PowerHy-5 equipment would turn off by itself.
An autonomous operating time per stop of 4.5 hours has been considered, sizing a storage of a bottle with a capacity of 1.6 Kg of hydrogen.
Hydrogen is not produced “in situ”. Hydrogen storage is exchanged when one of the storage bottles runs out (without the need to interrupt the power supply), thanks to the modular storage system.
The powerhy-5 equipment can be moved and taken to the desired location in a practical, simple and safe way.
Advantages:
– Zero emissions.
– On a mass basis, hydrogen contains up to 3 times more energy than gasoline.
– Cleanly store energy for long periods of time, being a very efficient technology from an operational point of view (space, seasonal storage, etc…)
– Advantage over energy storage with batteries, being able to store a large amount of energy in a small space using a minimum amount of materials. In addition, it is easier to recycle at the end of its useful operating life.
For a total of 50 generators of this type, with 4 annual stops of 4.5 hours, by introducing hydrogen technologies we would obtain savings in emissions of 4,752 kg of CO2, equivalent to 30 mature trees
